National Exit Test deferred for 3 to 4 years to assess feasibility

In a major relief for MBBS students across India, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has confirmed that the much-debated National Exit Test (NExT) will not be implemented for the next three to four years.

The decision was announced following a meeting between NMC Chairman Dr Abhijat Sheth and representatives of the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) in New Delhi on Wednesday.

MOCK TESTS TO ASSESS FEASIBILITY

Dr Sheth stated that the NMC plans to conduct a series of mock NExT exams, fully funded by the Commission, to evaluate the exam's structure, logistics, and student feedback.

Dr Abhijat Sheth stated that the National Exit Test (NExT) would not be implemented immediately. Over the next three to four years, the NMC plans to conduct mock examinations to evaluate feasibility, gather feedback from students and institutions, and use the findings to decide on the final rollout of the test.

The move aims to ensure readiness in terms of infrastructure, legal clarity, and academic integration before nationwide rollout.

FAIMA'S EVIDENCE-BASED INPUTS WELCOMED

FAIMA presented findings from its nationwide survey highlighting the concerns of medical students and resident doctors regarding training quality, workload, and institutional preparedness for NExT.
Dr Sheth appreciated FAIMA's data-driven approach and assured that the NMC would review its recommendations for inclusion in upcoming discussions on medical education policy.

ABOUT THE NExT EXAM

The National Exit Test (NExT) was introduced as a single examination for MBBS graduates, serving both as a licensing test to practice medicine and as a gateway for postgraduate admissions. It was earlier expected to be implemented from August 2025, but delays due to legal, structural, and logistical challenges have pushed the timeline.
