NEET 2026: Slight Increase in Applicants, Major Rise in MBBS Seats Expected

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has already released admit cards for more than 99% of the 22,79,743 registered candidates, who have also been allotted their preferred exam cities. This marks the final phase of preparation before the examination.

Last year, around 22.76 lakh candidates registered for approximately 1.29 lakh MBBS seats. According to sources from the National Medical Commission (NMC), several new applications have been submitted to start MBBS courses, along with proposals to expand capacity in existing colleges. This could lead to a notable increase in seats, although final numbers will be announced later. NEET also covers admissions to courses like BDS, Ayurveda, Unani, and Siddha, but MBBS remains the primary focus for most aspirants.

The exam is scheduled for May 3 and will be conducted in a single shift nationwide. Candidates can download their admit cards from the official NEET website. The NTA has ensured that 99.2% of students received their first-choice exam city to minimize travel challenges. The number of exam centers has increased to 5,446 this year.

During registration, candidates were asked to select three preferred cities, and nearly all have been accommodated accordingly. The city intimation slip was released earlier to help students plan in advance.

NEET continues to record one of the highest participation rates among national entrance exams. In 2025, around 22.09 lakh students appeared, with over 12.36 lakh qualifying. Attendance typically remains between 97% and 98%, and with most candidates getting their preferred cities this year, it may improve further.

Considering the stress associated with such competitive exams, the NTA has advised students to focus on their mental well-being. It emphasized that no exam is more important than life and encouraged candidates to seek help if needed. Free counseling support is available through Tele-MANAS, the government’s 24×7 mental health helpline (14416 or 1-800-891-4416), offering assistance in multiple languages.

As the exam date approaches, authorities are focusing on smooth execution, improved logistics, and increased seat availability to reduce pressure on students competing in one of India’s toughest entrance exams.
